Knee Arthroscopy allows visualisation and treatment of various knee problems thro’ a couple of small ‘sub cm’ incisions on front of the knee. Most arthroscopic procedures are day surgeries not requiring admission.
The ligaments inside the knee joint- ACL and PCL are commonly injured in sports related and unrelated twisting injuries of the knee joint. These can be easily repaired/ reconstructed arthroscopically. The shock absorber inside the knee joint- meniscus, (Pl- menisci) is often torn and can be repaired or replaced using artificial or transplanted meniscus arthroscopically.
I prefer a biological All Inside ACL reconstruction in my patients for better healing of the implanted graft. I am also an expert in minimally invasive extr articular knee surgeris as well E.g. Percutaneous PCL reconstruction, MCL internal bracing/ repair, POL advancement to name a few.
Cartilage regeneration procedures are on the rise and we can now use your own cartilage cells, grow these in a lab and reimplant them to regenerate the damaged or injured cartilage in the knee joint. This can give your knee a new lease of life.
I am a specialist in arthroscopic knee surgeries and have treated many a patients get back to an active life. So, if you are an athlete or a weekend warrior, we can work together to get you knee stable, strong and pain free and get you back in action!
This surgery isn’t very invasive. For most people, the procedure takes less than an hour depending on the specific procedure. You will likely go home on the same day or the next day. You should use an ice pack on your knee and a dressing. The ice will help reduce swelling and minimize your pain.
At home, you should have someone look after you, at least for the first day. Try to keep your leg elevated and put ice on it for a day or two to reduce swelling and pain. You will probably need to see me for a follow-up appointment a few days after the procedure.
I will give you an exercise regimen to follow at home to help your knee recover, or will recommend a physical therapist to see you until you’re able to use your knee normally. The exercises are necessary to help restore your full range of motion and to strengthen your muscles. With the proper care, your outlook after having this procedure is excellent.
Most patients are able to walk unaided and comfortably in 2-4 weeks from surgery except in meniscal repair where I insist on avoiding weight bearing for 6 weeks. For a simple meniscectomy surgery- a patient can return to normal life withing 2-4 weeks. ACL/ PCL ligament reconstructions: Light impact activities such as jogging can start in 4-6 months and training for return to sporting activities in 7-8 months. Generally, it takes at least 9 months to get back to impact sports activities such as football post ACL/PCL reconstructions. Just like pregnancy, prematurity leads to complications. Its essential to allow the new ligament to mature and you should not hurry into going back to sports unless your knee strength is equal or better than the other (non-operated) knee. It’s been shown in various studies that there is a 7 times higher risk of graft failure if sports are begun early.
Some of the primary benefits of minimally invasive surgery includes:
